Waarom een Helwig-Tourtocht voor LIVESTRONG?
Michel van Dijke is werkzaam als Timmerman, Arbocoördinator en Jobcoach bij Helwig Timmerfabriek . Dit bedrijf heeft onlangs de MVO-prijs (Maatschappelijk Verantwoord Ondernemen) gekregen.

Michel vertelt: ‘Mijn hart ligt bij het wielrennen en ik heb enorme bewondering voor Lance Armstrong. Met name hoe hij de ziekte heeft kunnen overwinnen. Ik heb een oom die te vroeg aan kanker is overleden. En collega’s die kanker hebben gehad of eraan zijn gestorven. Gelukkig heb ik de ziekte kanker nog niet van heel kort bij hoeven meemaken. Dit wil niet zeggen dat ik dan maar ook niets hoef te doen. Ik wil graag mensen helpen.

Dit alles bij elkaar bracht me op het idee om een tourtocht te organiseren, een ‘Helwig Tourtocht’ omdat mijn werkgever het geheel wilde sponsoren. Met deze tocht zijn werknemers, relaties en bekenden gaan sporten en hebben we geld opgehaald voor een goed doel”.

De Helwig Tourtocht
Na een bemoedigend woord van Wil Helwig, Algemeen Directeur Helwig Timmerfabriek, en Nicoliene Bakkenes, teamlid van LIVESTRONG_NL, werd er even stilte in acht genomen om stil te staan bij de mensen die de strijd tegen kanker hebben verloren.

Daarna liet Kenneth, wiens vader enkele weken eerder aan kanker was overleden, het startsein klinken en vertrok de stoet – onder begeleiding van enkele motoren – op weg naar het parcours van de Amstel Gold Race. Een lang gemeleerd peloton fietste via het uitdagende AGR parcours naar de pauze plaats bij het bedrijfspand van Helwig B.V. Na een korte pauze met eten en drinken werd de tocht via de verschillende beklimmingen voortgezet.

Eenmaal bij de finish op de Cauberg aangekomen werden deelnemers met applaus ontvangen door de andere gasten. Met een drankje en een heerlijke pastamaaltijd geheel verzorgd door de Amstel Gold Race Xperience, werd er gezellig nagepraat. Dick Weisz, bestuurslid van de stichting LIVESTRONG_NL, sprak nog een dankwoord uit voor deze geslaagde dag en de prachtige donatie. Op het zonnige terras bij de Amstel Gold Race Xperience genoten de deelnemers nog gezellig na. Ook kregen zij bij vertrek een goedgevulde goodiebag van de diverse sponsoren.

OVERVIEW

The inaugural Assembly in 2011 connected our program partners to the donors who fund them and recognized individuals, both programmatic partners and donors, who make our work possible.

The 2012 LIVESTRONG Assembly will promote collaboration and exchange of ideas amongst LIVESTRONG‘s most important partners, advisors and constituents through small group meetings, presentations and social gatherings. The event will highlight our collective achievements and connect our programmatic partners to the individuals who advocate for the 28 million living with cancer.

This year, LIVESTRONG also marks the 15th anniversary of our fight against cancer. Over the past 15 years, $275 million, 81 cents of every dollar raised, has been spent on programs and initiatives to improve the lives of cancer survivors and their families.

WHAT’S HAPPENING

More than 10 partner groups will be meeting throughout the LIVESTRONG Assembly, working on tactical plans and 2012 initiatives in their respective areas. We will also host a variety of elective, collaborative activities including the State of the Foundation lunch on Thursday where participants will hear from LIVESTRONG President and CEO, Doug Ulman, a Fun Fajita Dinner Thursday night where you’ll be able to kick back and enjoy the company of your fellow attendees and a Collaborative Mission meeting on Friday morning where all groups will join to network with one another and learn how everyone contributes to the success of our mission.

OOSTERWOLDE – Op zaterdag 18 februari presenteerde Sportcentrum Impuls een zes uur durende RPM marathon ten bate van LIVESTRONG_NL. Onder de titel ”RPM RIDES THE RACE OF TRUTH FOR LIVESTRONG” werd er door meer dan 150 deelnemers gefietst voor de strijd tegen kanker.

Het RPM evenement werd georganiseerd door een team van enthousiaste Les Mills instructeurs van Sportcentrum Impuls: Ronald Dekker, Ger de Haan en Klaas Visser

RPM staat voor Raw Power In Motion en is een vorm van indoor cycling. RPM is ook een programma met bijpassende muziek voor diegenen die hun conditie willen verbeteren of een betere fietsprestatie willen realiseren

Er werd een uitdagend programma geboden dat diverse activiteiten bevatte die te maken hadden met fietsen. Zo was er een DJ Battle en een optreden van het popkoor Just4Fun. Voor het publiek en de deelnemers was het een unieke beleving: fietsen op de muziek en zang van dit Popkoor Just4Fun. Ook waren er Mystery Guests (gastinstructeurs) en konden enthousiaste RPM deelnemers zelf het podium op om hun favoriete track te presenteren in het onderdeel: So you wanne be an RPM instructor.

Per programmaonderdeel stapten er gemiddeld dertig deelnemers op de fiets. Daarvoor werd er per persoon een bedrag gedoneerd. Ook was het mogelijk om vrijwillig een donatie te doen. Tezamen werd er door de deelnemers een opbrengst van 3432,50 euro opgehaald. Een groot deel van dit bedrag wordt gestoken in de verdere ontwikkeling van hyperthermie.

De belangstelling van de Impuls-leden, sponsors en het publiek was groot. Het was een zeer succesvolle dag!

LIVESTRONG specializes primarily in two disciplines:
- direct service to cancer survivors and advocacy for policies and
- funding befitting the world’s leading cause of death.
In the area of direct service, LIVESTRONG provides free, bilingual patient-centered navigation services for people and families struggling with the physical, financial, legal, emotional and practical challenges that accompany cancer. In 2011, nearly 15,000 cancer survivors and their loved ones turned to the Foundation for these support services.

LIVESTRONG provides services in five main areas:
1) Coping with emotional concerns through counseling and support groups;
2) Addressing insurance, financial and job concerns;
3) Providing education about and matching to clinical trials and new treatments in development; 4) Locating and accessing local resources; and
5) Providing information about fertility risks and access to discounted rates for fertility preservation services.

Since cancer and its treatment often affect patient fertility, LIVESTRONG created Sharing Hope, a discounted fertility preservation program. Since 2010, Sharing Hope users have saved more than $2 million in their efforts to preserve their fertility. In advocacy, LIVESTRONG supports state, national and global policies and funding that serve survivors, aid prevention, fund research, promote access to treatment and strengthen health systems. In 2007, LIVESTRONG campaigned for the largest state-level initiative for cancer prevention in history — Proposition 15 — a 10-year, $3 billion investment that Texas voters overwhelmingly supported. The passage of this bill led to the creation of the Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas, which to date has awarded nearly $600 million in cancer prevention, research and commercialization grants.

In 2012, LIVESTRONG is supporting the California Cancer Research Act, a June ballot initiative that will result in significant reductions in smoking and billions more in funding for cancer research. If passed by voters, the California Cancer Research Act will provide more than $500 million a year to find new ways to detect, treat, prevent and cure cancer and other tobacco-related illnesses. The coalition, co-chaired by Armstrong, is led by the American Cancer Society, American Lung Association, American Heart Association, Campaign for Tobacco Free Kids and LIVESTRONG.

LIVESTRONG hopes to play an active role in the passage of a statewide smoke-free indoor workplace law in Texas in 2013. Smoke-Free Texas is a broad coalition of organizations who believe all Texas employees and customers have the right to breathe clean indoor air. LIVESTRONG and its coalition partners campaign for passage of comprehensive smoke-free workplace legislation to protect Texans from the dangers of secondhand smoke exposure in their places of business, including bars and restaurants.
Though LIVESTRONG’s primary focus today is service and advocacy, the organization’s historical support of cancer research remains. Since 1998, LIVESTRONG has invested more than $40 million in research grants.

LIVESTRONG’s other notable successes over the past 15 years include
– Since its inception in 1997, the organization has invested nearly $70
million in community-centered organizations. Today, the Foundation’s
Community Impact Project funds programs throughout the U.S. that serve
survivors and their loved ones, such as Supersibs! which specializes
in sibling support for pediatric cancer patients, and Camp Kesem, a
summer camp for children with a parent affected by cancer.
– In 2004, the Foundation and Nike launched the now-iconic yellow
LIVESTRONG wristband. To date, Nike has helped raise more than $100
million for the Foundation through the distribution of the $1
wristbands.
– LIVESTRONG now has more than 250 highly-engaged advocates in 35

which spurred both presidential candidates to address their plans for
the disease, a first in the history of presidential campaigns.

work in more than 60 countries around the world and an investment in
cancer control of more than $200 million.
– Working with The Economist Intelligence Unit and the American Cancer
Society, LIVESTRONG shed new light on cancer’s global economic toll
with two groundbreaking studies in 2009 and 2010.

action against non-communicable diseases and in 2011, LIVESTRONG urged

United Nations High-Level Meeting on Non-communicable Diseases.
– The LIVESTRONG Cancer Navigation Center opened in 2011, marking an
expansion of the direct services the Foundation offers, available
online and by phone and now in-person. This community-based center,

– Through its LIVESTRONG Challenge series and Team LIVESTRONG events,

“In 2008, I was diagnosed with and treated for Thyroid Cancer. After a rough year of treatment and med adjustments, I competed in my first sprint triathlons. A year later I was declared Cancer Free. In order to celebrate my full recovery, I decided to participate in several races to include the Paris Marathon, Berlin Marathon, and Antwerp Ironman 70.3 Triathlon and raise money for the Lance Armstrong Foundation.

My fundraising efforts began with a goal of $1000 for my run in Paris. Thanks to the generosity of my friends and family, I was able to meet that goal. The race went well and I continued to raise money, reaching over $1600 by the end of my “Remission Euro Tour 2010.”

Basis
De beste training voor fietsen is fietsen. Dat kan ook in de winter. Spinning of RPM, op de hometrainer, mountainbike en bij goed weer buiten.

Belangrijk is om een goede basis te krijgen, dit is het fundament. Dat kan door in januari en februari 2 x per week te fietsen. Door de week wellicht 1 x  binnen en in het weekend 1 x rustig buiten te fietsen.Vanaf maart kan de training binnen wat zwaarder worden door 4 blokjes van 5 minuten met een zware versnelling te trappen en in het weekend de rustige training op te voeren tot 1,5 a 2 uur.

Zomertijd
Vanaf april kun je ook s’ avonds buiten fietsen en 1 x per week met een groepje mee fietsen. Hiermee leer je in een groep te fietsen, het is dikwijls gezellig en je profiteert van de snelheid. In het weekend kan de training worden opgevoerd tot 2 a 3 uur. Het is verstandig om eens een toertocht te hebben gereden van te voren. In deze maand beginnen de meeste toertochten.

Opvoeren
In mei mag de trainingsomvang iets omhoog. Probeer 3 x per week te fietsen, waarvan 1 x een rustige lange training en 1 x met een groepje. De rustige lange training mag aan het einde van de maand worden opgevoerd tot 4 uur. Met deze basisconditie is het al mogelijk om een toertocht op geaccidenteerd terrein te fietsen. In de Ardennen en Limburg worden met regelmaat laagdrempelige tochten georganiseerd. Je inschrijven voor onze clinics op het parcours van de Amstel Gold Race >> is ook een aanrader.

Genieten
Tijdens de laatste weken voor jouw tocht is het dan zaak om gezond te blijven en de conditie te onderhouden. Probeer tijdens de langere tochten vooral te genieten van de omgeving en van de progressie die je wellicht hebt gemaakt. Tijdens de laatste week fiets je door de week nog 1 x rustig en zo begin je goed voorbereid, uitgerust en met een goede conditie aan jouw toertocht – Zie ook Delta Ride forthe Roses >>

RPM marathon ten bate van LIVESTRONG_NL!

De steun die wij krijgen van bedrijven als Medifit Breda is voor ons erg belangrijk. Dankzij hun inzet kunnen wij aandacht blijven vragen voor kanker. Dit keer namen bijna 200 leden deel aan de LIVESTRONG RPM marathon i.s.m. Medifit Breda.

Een speciale schenking werd gedaan uit naam van Winfried van Dieën, die eerder dit jaar overleed aan kanker. Het verzamelde bedrag werd mede mogelijk gemaakt door familie, vrienden en kennissen van de overleden Winfried van Dieën, vader van Robert de initiatiefnemer van deze donatie. De opbrengst van deze RPM marathon wordt gestoken in de verdere ontwikkeling van hyperthermie. Hyperthermie is een behandelvorm waarbij kankercellen gedood worden door ze te verwarmen. Voordelen zijn: meer kans op genezing, een hogere kwaliteit van leven en minder bijwerkingen dan chemotherapie.

Fietsen, zweten en diepgaan voor het goede doel

BREDA – Een grote zaal met opzwepende muziek, waar discolichten de zweetdruppels op de voorhoofden van de deelnemers laten zien. Alle fietsers dragen het kenmerkende gele polsbandje van ‘LIVESTRONG’. Een van de vier spinninginstructeurs roept aanwijzingen en pept de mensen op: “De eerste piek is voor jezelf, de andere vier zijn voor LIVESTRONG!”

In de RPM-zaal van medisch sportcentrum Medifit Breda werd vrijdagavond 9 december geld opgehaald voor het Nederlandse LIVESTRONG team. De avond stond in het teken van de RPM-marathon, waarbij in het totaal bijna 200 deelnemers fietsen voor het goede doel. Van zes tot elf werden vijf rondes gereden. Tussen de rondes door werden er boeken, LIVESTRONG bidons en een Nike/LIVESTRONG trainingsjack geveild.

Het geld dat vrijdagavond opgehaald werd, wordt gestoken in onderzoek naar Hyperthermie, een behandelmethode waarbij kankercellen verhit worden. Met deze behandelmethode is de kans op genezing van kanker groter en zijn er minder bijwerkingen dan bij chemotherapie.

Rustig fietsen zit er vanavond niet bij. Bij elke ronde zijn er een hoop zware beklimmingen en snelle sprints, wat er voor zorgt dat iedereen z’n uiterste best moet doen. Ondanks het feit dat het zwaar is tonen veel gezichten een lach. Een speciale gast is Nelis Koeken, spinning-instructeur en renner in de belofteploeg van VacanSoleil. Volgens hem was het zwaar, maar dit werd ruimschoots goedgemaakt: “Het was leuk en heel mooi om te zien dat iedereen samen fietste voor het goede doel.”

Met een glas champagne en het nummer ‘Brabant’ wordt de avond afgesloten. De deelnemers, waarvan sommigen vijf uur achter elkaar fietsten, hebben samen 1869 euro opgehaald. Dit is inclusief de donatie van 375 euro, een bedrag dat is opgehaald door deelnemer en RPM-instructeur Robert van Dieën, zijn familie en vrienden. Roberts vader is deze zomer onverwacht overleden aan longkanker en Robert en zijn familie wilden uit zijn naam een bijdrage leveren.

Sandra Kleine, eigenares van Medifit Breda, zegt heel erg tevreden te zijn. “Dit is de vijfde keer dat er een RPM-marathon werd georganiseerd, maar nog nooit met en voor LIVESTRONG.” Zij geeft aan dat ze trots is op haar instructeurs, deelnemers en iedereen die gedoneerd heeft. Ook heeft ze er absoluut interesse in om volgend jaar weer met LIVESTRONG_NL samen te werken. Tom van Teeffelen, vrijwilliger bij de stichting, noemt het een hele mooie avond met een goede sfeer: “Door dit soort evenementen krijgen we ook meer vrijwilligers en dat is goed!”

De deelnemers worden gepusht om zo hard mogelijk door te gaan. Tussen de rondes is de sfeer gemoedelijk en wordt er veel gelachen. Als er af en toe een stilte valt in de muziek hoor je de fietsers hijgen. Een van de mensen die vijf uur achter elkaar fietst, veegt het zweet weg en lacht: “Dit is gaaf, dit is heel gaaf. Ik ben helemaal kapot, maar het doel is het absoluut waard.”

In de laatste tien minuten van de marathon lijkt de zaal te exploderen. Mensen die volledig kapot leken, vinden ergens nog een restje energie. Opgezweept door de muziek en instructeurs geven zij alles wat ze nog in zich hadden.
